The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins — Spoiler-Free Review

Okay, I genuinely don’t even know where to start with this book because The Hunger Games is SO GOOD.

I’ll be honest: it was kind of hard for me to get into at first. The beginning took me a little while to really get into, and I wasn't immediately completely hooked. BUT once I got into it, I was OBSESSED. Like, genuinely obsessed. Once the story picked up, I could NOT stop reading. I was constantly thinking about what was going to happen next, and every time I had to put the book down I just wanted to pick it right back up.

I went into this book knowing it was popular and expecting to like it, but I was not expecting to get this invested. Suzanne Collins creates a world that is so interesting and intense that once I got into the story, it was really hard to put the book down.

The story follows Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl living in a place called Panem. Every year, teenagers from the different districts are chosen to participate in an event called the Hunger Games. I’m not going to explain much more than that because I genuinely think this is a book you should experience for yourself!

One of my favorite things about this book is Katniss as a main character. She feels like an actual person instead of a perfect superhero character. She's strong and determined, but she also has moments where she's unsure of herself. I really liked watching her figure things out as the story went along.

The characters in general are one of the biggest reasons I loved this book. They all have such different personalities, and I found myself getting attached to them surprisingly quickly. Some characters made me laugh, some made me frustrated, and some had me sitting there thinking, “WHAT IS GOING ON???”

I also REALLY liked the world-building. Panem feels like a real place with its own history, rules, culture, and social differences. The book doesn't just throw you into the world and expect you to understand everything immediately. You slowly learn more about it as you read, which made me want to know even more.

Another thing I loved was how much the book made me think. Even though it's exciting and fast-paced, there are also bigger ideas throughout the story about power, society, family, loyalty, and how people can be influenced by what they see and hear. So it's definitely more than just an action book.

And the pacing??? SO GOOD. Once I was past the beginning, there were so many times when I told myself I would read one more chapter and then ended up reading way more than I planned.

I honestly don't want to say too much because part of what makes The Hunger Games so good is discovering everything yourself. There are moments where I was completely shocked, moments where I was stressed out, and moments where I just had to stare at the page for a second.

If you're thinking about reading it, DO NOT LOOK UP SPOILERS. Seriously. Go into it knowing as little as possible and let the story surprise you.

Final Rating: 100/10

Would I recommend it? Absolutely.

Would I read it again? 100%.

Did I get emotionally attached to fictional characters? Unfortunately, yes.

Is it worth reading? YES.

The Hunger Games is exciting, emotional, unpredictable, and incredibly easy to get hooked on. Even though it took me a little while to get into at first, once I did, I WAS OBSESSED. If you're looking for a book that will make you want to keep turning the pages, this is definitely one to add to your reading list.

Just trust me. Read it. And don't Google anything first.
