Staying at Gaylord Rockies: A Resort That’s Basically a Vacation by Itself
Okay, normally when we travel, the hotel is mostly just the place where we sleep before heading out to explore. But Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center was definitely NOT one of those hotels.
This place was basically an entire vacation on its own.
Between the pools, lazy river, live music, s’mores, scavenger hunts, pizza nights, and our daily trips to what we lovingly called “fake Starbucks,” there was so much to do that we actually wanted to spend time at the resort instead of constantly leaving.
And honestly? I could have floated around that lazy river for HOURS.
🌊 The Pool Area Was AMAZING
Let’s start with my favorite part: the pools.
Gaylord Rockies has both an indoor and outdoor pool, which is awesome because you don't have to worry as much about the weather ruining your pool plans.
But the real star was definitely the lazy river.
There is something about grabbing a tube and just floating around without having to do anything that makes vacation approximately 100 times better. 😂
Another thing my parents definitely appreciated was that there were lifeguards on duty at the pool area. It was nice knowing there were lifeguards keeping an eye on everything while everyone was swimming and floating around. Of course, parents still need to supervise their kids, but having lifeguards there was an extra bonus.
We spent a ton of time swimming, floating, and hanging out by the water. If you're traveling with kids or tweens who love pools, I would definitely plan for actual resort time here instead of filling every minute of your trip with activities.
Seriously. Do not forget your swimsuit.
🔥 S’mores at the Resort
Another thing I loved was the s’mores stations!
Because apparently swimming all day isn't enough—you also need toasted marshmallows.
Obviously.
Making s’mores in the evening was such a fun little vacation activity, and it made the resort feel more like a summer camp or mountain getaway than a giant hotel.
There’s just something about eating a slightly burnt marshmallow outside that makes everything feel more like vacation.
🎶 Live Music at Night
There was also live music most nights while we were there.
I really liked this because after a busy day, we didn't necessarily have to get back in the car and find something else to do. We could just hang out around the resort, listen to music, and enjoy the evening.
It gave the whole courtyard area such a fun atmosphere, especially when everyone was outside hanging out.
🍕 Pizza + Friends + Courtyard = Perfect Night
One of my favorite nights was actually one of the simplest.
We ordered Mondo’s Pizza and ate it outside in the courtyard with friends.
No fancy restaurant. No reservations. No big plans.
Just pizza, friends, and a really cool place to hang out.
And sometimes those end up being the best vacation memories.
After spending the day swimming and exploring, sitting outside eating pizza together was exactly what we needed. Plus, eating pizza at a resort somehow feels way more exciting than eating pizza at home. I don't know why. Those are just the rules.
☕ Our Daily Stop at “Fake Starbucks”
The resort also has coffee on-site, which became a very important part of our stay.
We started calling it “fake Starbucks.” 😂
Was it actually Starbucks?
No. But they served Starbucks Coffee. We weren’t really sure how that all works, but it didn’t stop us from popping in every day!
It became one of those funny little things that we kept saying throughout the trip, and now whenever I think about Gaylord Rockies, I also think about going to get our “fake Starbucks.”
Parents traveling with kids should probably know that having coffee available without having to leave the resort is also a VERY important hotel feature.
At least according to my parents.
🔎 The Hotel Even Had a Scavenger Hunt!
One of the coolest surprises was that the hotel provided a scavenger hunt. You just have to stop by the front desk and ask for the sheet, then start searching!
Obviously, we had to do it.
It gave us a reason to wander around and explore parts of the resort that we probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise. And Gaylord Rockies is HUGE, so exploring the hotel can actually feel like an activity.
I love when hotels have little extras like this because it makes staying there way more fun—especially for kids and tweens.
Instead of just walking through the hotel, you're actually looking for things and trying to complete a challenge.
🏔️ It Actually Feels Like You’re in Colorado
One thing that makes Gaylord Rockies especially cool is the atmosphere.
It's a gigantic resort, but it still has that Colorado mountain-lodge feeling. There are huge windows, lots of places to hang out, outdoor spaces, and views that remind you that you're actually in Colorado.
And because there is so much happening at the resort, it’s a really nice place to come back to after a day of exploring.
You don't feel like the fun is over just because you're back at the hotel.
⭐ Would I Stay at Gaylord Rockies Again?
YES.
Gaylord Rockies is definitely one of those hotels where I would recommend leaving room in your itinerary just to enjoy the resort.
Don't book every second of your trip.
Have a pool afternoon.
Float around the lazy river.
Do the scavenger hunt.
Grab your “fake Starbucks.”
Make a s’more.
Order pizza.
Listen to the live music.
And just hang out.
Sometimes when you're traveling, it feels like you need to constantly be going somewhere or seeing something. But one of my favorite parts about staying at Gaylord Rockies was that staying at the hotel actually felt like an activity.
And when your hotel has a lazy river, s’mores, pizza, and a scavenger hunt...
Why would you want to leave?
✈️ Hallie’s Tip
If you're staying at Gaylord Rockies, give yourself at least one afternoon or evening with absolutely nothing planned.
Make sure you get a family picture in front of their gigantic indoor waterfall feature. Another photo spot with with the big bear statue!
Trust me.
You're going to want that lazy river time. 🌊
